L. H. Rowell, Confederate Veteran, Dies at Age 98

Was Last Surviving Wearer of the Gray In Lancaster County- Is Survived

By 62 Grandchildren, 98 Great Grandchildren, and Four Great Great

Grandchildren----Funeral Held Friday

Louis Haseltine Rowell, last surviving Confederate Veteran in Lancaster County, died at his home last Thursday. He had celebrated his 98^th birthday on April 30.

Mr. Rowell is survived by seven sons, three daughters, 62 grandchildren, 98 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Three children preceded him to the grave.

Mr. Rowell’s first marriage was to Miss Nellie Carnes and the thirteen children were born to this union. His second marriage was to Miss Sarah Taylor.

Children who survive are Radford R. Rowell. Lancaster County; Thomas J. Rowell, Rock Hill; James B. Rowell, Joshua S. Rowell, and Lewis L. Rowell, Lancaster County; Charles H. Rowell and R. Duncan Rowell, Lancaster; Mrs. H. W. Taylor, Lancaster; Mrs. M. L. Walters and Mrs. Ellen Duncan, Lancaster County.

Funeral services which were conducted at Tabernacle Methodist Church on Friday afternoon by Rev. W. B. Garrett, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. J. W. McElrath and Rev. Oliver Carmichael, were very impressive. A Confederate flag made during the war draped the casket. A detachment of Co. D. of the State Guard  took part in the funeral. Internment was in the Tabernacle cemetery.

At the age of 16 years, Mr. Rowell joined the Confederate army and was with it until the end of the conflict.

Mr. Rowell died in the home in which he had lived for many years and in which all of his children except one was born. He had been a lifelong member of the Tabernacle Methodist Church.
